Sickness. Disease. Ailments. Affliction. Symptoms. These are words that we are all too familiar with, and at one point or another have carved out negative experiences into our lives. You would never wish to be sick or wish it on anyone else. If you are a parent, you especially know how terrible it is to watch your child suffer in pain & discomfort. If you had it within your ability, you would never use sickness as a form of punishment or as a teaching tool to grow them as a person. It’s quite the opposite. If you had it within your ability, you would make sure they never had to experience suffering again or even better, prevent it from happening in the first place. Why? Because you love them, and any good parent wants the best for their children. They want to see their children thrive not suffer. While discipline is a part of good parenting, its intended to benefit not harm our children. True discipline will build trust, not fear. If we are inflicting harm or withholding what it is they need, we would be classified as a terrible parent. Possibly even abusive. Nothing I’ve said so far is profound. It’s obvious, right? Why is this not as obvious when it comes to our Heavenly father? Most believe He can heal if He so chooses or that He heals some but not all… or that not all healing is intended for us here on earth. These doctrines are based on negative experiences, not scripture.
Physical healing seems to fall in this strange grey area with a lot of Christians. Almost as if we shouldn’t be talking about it in order not to offend others. Let me say, I am passing no judgement on anyone you lost to sickness or anyone currently dealing with it! I was once sick! This is simply meant to shine light on an area of scripture and our identity that I believe should be spoken about in the same way we talk about the forgiveness of our sins. Healing is a biproduct of salvation, in the same way that forgiveness is. How so? Well because sickness is a result and product of the curse. You can read about the consequences of the curse in Deuteronomy 28. Galatians 3:13 says Christ purchased our freedom and redeemed us from the curse by becoming the curse for us. If he removed the curse, then the consequences of the curse have been removed as well. Why should you pay the price for something you are no longer charged with? I know that this can be a difficult idea to accept if you are looking around for evidence in the natural realm. Sickness seems to be something we must accept as a part of life because it’s all around us, but Jesus never said that.
If you read the gospels, you will quickly realize that Jesus did two things throughout His ministry… He taught and he healed the sick. There isn’t a single recording of Jesus turning someone down or refusing healing to anyone. He never once told someone that their healing was available in heaven and that they couldn’t experience the fullness here. The cool thing about reading the gospels is it tells us so much about the Father’s heart for us. In John 5:19, Jesus says He could do nothing by Himself but could only do what He saw the Father do. This is just one example of how looking to the life and ministry of Jesus is a direct reflection of God’s heart and will for us. Jesus also said in John 14:31 that He did exactly what the Father commanded. God’s heart then was clearly for healing, and it’s no different today. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Acts 10:38 says that Jesus went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil. John 10:10 says, “the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I come that they may have and enjoy life and have it in abundance”. We must make sure we are labeling things correctly. If it looks like destruction of any kind, it’s from the enemy. If it looks like life in abundance, it’s from the Lord. If God was responsible for all destruction, anguish, sickness & hardship, why do we have an enemy? The enemy’s power is within the lie. If we never learn to recognize that lie and place blame on the enemy, how do we ever build up strength, courage, knowledge, and wisdom to defeat him in those areas of attack. If we continue to attribute sickness to the workings of God or continue to make excuses as to why God is allowing this in one’s life, then we never face the enemy head on and claim victory that belongs to us through Christ.
Psalms 103:2-5 Bless and praise the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget any of His benefits; who forgives all of your sins, who heals all of your diseases; who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you lavishly with lovingkindness and tender mercy; who satisfies your years with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the soaring eagle
When I was in need of physical healing and first started reading verses like the ones I’ve mentioned, I began to make the connection between the life of Jesus and the heart of the Father. I had to first realize sickness wasn’t from Him. It’s a part of the curse, and He redeemed us from the curse. That’s exactly what 2 Peter 2:24 is talking about when it says, He personally carried our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness: for by His wounds, you have been healed. If you read this verse carefully, you’ll see that the removal of our sin and healing are referenced like they are a package deal. He carried our sin in His body and removed it, and therefore He healed us! This is amazing news for someone needing healing. You may be wondering why then so many people, even Christians get sick and sometimes die as a result. If we are already healed, then how is this happening? The answer is simpler than you may expect. Jesus handed over all authority to us. In Matthew 16:19 Jesus tells His disciples, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth will have already been bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will have already been loosed in heaven. In other words, He is saying we get to decide what we forbid and what we permit! Jesus says again in Luke 10:19, “I have given you authority that you now possess to tread on serpents and scorpions, and the ability to exercise authority over all the power of the enemy.” If you simplify this idea of authority it looks like agreement. What you agree with is what you give authority to. So, if you agree with symptoms and the idea of sickness then essentially you give your authority to it. But if you give your agreement to what the Word says, you can give it final authority in your life and experience all it says is yours in Christ, healing included. If you are curious how I obtained my healing and freedom from a diagnosis and persisting symptoms, it looked like giving my agreement to the Word. I didn’t deny the report or the symptoms. I just grew to deny them a right in my life based off what the Word says. As a result, I’ve obtained freedom and my healing. It didn’t happen overnight for me, and not because it can’t. It just took me time to grow into the truth...the understanding that Jesus provided me healing at the very same time that He provided forgiveness of my sins. I would battle discouragement, fear, and confusion when a symptom would occur, but the Lord was so patient and loving…never once holding it against me. He was always there gently speaking truth to my heart when I brought my fear and questions to Him. Even when we waver, He is steadfast. He is constant and true to His Word no matter the circumstance we may be dealing with. Jeremiah 1:12 says, God Himself stands and watches over His Word, making sure it is fulfilled. Accepting the cross into your life is an all-inclusive deal…it bears forgiveness, healing, prosperity, peace, fulfilment, love, & freedom.
"What you agree with is what you give authority to."
Through seeking His heart through the Word, I’ve discovered He is more loving than I ever imagined. He never desired that suffering in my life. His plans for me were always good just like His plans for you are good. He wants to see us living, thriving, and fulfilling those good plans on earth as it is in Heaven. Embrace the goodness of the Father and receive His love for you. He won’t ever hurt you and He will never let you down. Healing is provided!
Wow this is such powerful truth! Every post is so good and filled with Gods truth, but this one is my favorite ❤️
