How to unlock your ability to hear God...

How do I hear God’s voice? Would God talk to me directly? How can I be certain if it’s Him? Is everyone qualified to hear His voice? These were questions I had when I first gave my life to the Lord. In any healthy relationship, healthy communication is required, and it starts with getting to know and learning the other person. Who they are and how they think…their nature and character. The same is true about a relationship with God and hearing Him clearly. If you have found it hard to identify His voice, I have a very simple solution that will allow hearing from Him to become a part of your everyday life.

The simple answer is getting to know the nature and character of God through reading His word. By reading and studying the Word, you get familiar with His language, His ways of operating, and ultimately His personality. You start to recognize His character throughout the scriptures, and you discover that He has His own style. This may sound strange, but it’s very much true. You find out what He has to say about Himself, what He has to say about you, and His opinions on just about everything! By getting to know who He is, you will begin to recognize what He is saying. On the other hand, understanding what He isn’t saying can be equally as important and here is why… there are a lot of false ideas and doctrines about who God is and how He operates. If you don’t dive into the Word for yourself, you may be quick to believe any old lie someone else is believing or repeating and take that as your truth. Accepting the wrong truth can be extremely dangerous. This is true about a number of things but especially spiritual realities. It will not just hinder your ability to hear but also distort your true knowledge of who He is and ultimately your authority in Christ. Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge”. When I first read this verse, it was so eye opening and I began to realize just how important the source of your knowledge truly is. How it relates to and shapes what you believe…your reality.

Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge”.

If someone told you a lie about someone you didn’t know very well, you would have no real reason not to believe them. But if someone told you a lie about someone you knew personally, you would quickly be able to determine if it were true or not, based on their character. That is my point. There were things I believed and assumed about God until I started reading the Bible for myself. I began to realize that there were many things that I assumed God was responsible for that He had no part in. This was simply a result of believing things I’ve heard repeated my whole life. There are lots of things repeated about God that simply don’t match up with what the Word says. They are just word of mouth. So, if you do not know what the Word says, how can you really be sure what He is saying.

Once I started to read the truth (His word) for myself, I was able to sort through and clean out the lies in my own belief system, especially about physical healing. I began to gain a true knowledge about Him. The real Him. I started to see myself in the scriptures and over time was able to read it like He was speaking directly to me. Because He was. The Bible is not just a historical manuscript…its prophetic! When He spoke all these ancient verses, He was thinking of you, of me, and of all we would ever have to come against in this life. By getting familiar with the scriptures, you put yourself in position to hear and discern His voice with clarity. John 10:27 says His sheep will know and recognize His voice. That’s because a shepherd’s voice is familiar and trusted to a sheep. The only way to make His voice familiar and trusted is to find out what it sounds like by getting to know His nature and character. Once you do, I promise you that you will start to recognize His voice. It will become clear and easy to identify because you will have something to base it off of. You will begin to feel like you know Him personally like you do a close friend. When I’m in doubt about something I believe He said to me, I fact check it with scripture. I’ll ask myself, does this line up with what He says in scripture? If the answer is yes, then I know its Him because He will never speak something that is contradictory to what the Word says. He can’t be separated from His word so it’s the best way to familiarize, recognize, and identify what He is saying. John 1:1 says, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself. The Word was God! Wow!

So, if you are wanting to hear Him or feel like you are struggling to identify His voice, open the Word and find out what He is saying and who He is! Read from a place of desiring to know Him more and allow Him to reveal Himself and His voice to you. Don’t take my word or anyone else’s word for it… take His and unlock your ability to hear Him for yourself!!
